Are there side effects from finasteride or dutasteride?

Yes, there can be, but the real numbers are far smaller than the internet suggests and usually resolve. The absolute difference in sexual side effects over placebo is about 1.7 points, dropping to 0.3% or less by year 5. Dutasteride is similar.

My scalp is irritated, itchy, or burning: is this normal?

Mild scalp irritation, dryness, or itching in the first 2–4 weeks of a new topical is common and usually settles. If it's significant, lasts past 4 weeks, or includes burning or a rash, pause and message your provider.
