My scalp is irritated, itchy, or burning: is this normal?Updated 3 hours ago
Quick answer
Mild scalp irritation, dryness, or transient itching in the first 2–4 weeks of a new topical is common and usually settles as your scalp adjusts. If the irritation is significant, lasts past 4 weeks, or includes burning, redness, swelling, or a rash, pause the topical and message your Adegen provider through your account, and we may adjust your protocol. For any sign of an allergic reaction, such as facial swelling, hives, or difficulty breathing, stop use immediately and seek emergency medical care.
What's Normal in the First 4 Weeks
Starting an active topical on the scalp often comes with a short adjustment period. The following are usually nothing to worry about early on:
- Mild itching or tingling
- Slight dryness or flaking
- A brief warm or tingly sensation right after application
These typically ease within the first few weeks as your scalp gets used to the formula.
What's Not Normal, and What to Do
Pause the topical and reach out if you notice:
- Burning that doesn't settle
- Itching or irritation that's severe, or that's still going past 4 weeks
- Redness, swelling, blistering, or a spreading rash
- Open or weeping skin
Message your Adegen provider through your account portal. They may switch you to a different variant, lower the application frequency, or move you to a different route (for example, oral instead of topical).
Common Causes of Irritation
- The topical contains tretinoin, which renews the scalp surface and can cause dryness or sensitivity, especially early on
- Applying to a scalp that isn't fully dry, or applying more than directed
- Over-exfoliating or rolling too aggressively before application
- Naturally sensitive or already-compromised scalp skin
Simple Steps for Mild Irritation
- Make sure your scalp is completely dry before applying the topical.
- Apply only the directed amount to the thinning areas; more isn't better.
- Ease off the Microderm Scalp Roller and Exfoliation Brush for a few days if your scalp is tender.
- Give it 1–2 weeks to settle. If it's improving, you're likely just adjusting.
Allergic Reaction: Red Flags
Stop use immediately and seek emergency medical care (call 911) if you experience any of these:
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
- Hives or a widespread rash
- Difficulty breathing or tightness in the chest
- Dizziness or fainting
These are signs of a possible severe allergic reaction and need urgent medical attention, not a support ticket.
When to Escalate
Any reported allergic reaction, or any irritation that's severe or worsening, goes straight to a member of our team who will loop in your Adegen provider. You don't have to figure out whether it "counts." If you're worried, tell us and we'll get the right person involved.
