Is it safe to use Adegen products during pregnancy?Updated 3 hours ago
Quick answer
During pregnancy or while trying to conceive, only ARB™ Shampoo+ and the Scalp Exfoliation Brush are recommended. Everything else, including topicals containing minoxidil or tretinoin, oral medications, and the Microderm Scalp Roller, should wait until after pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tell the HairIQ™ assessment you're pregnant or trying to conceive and it will recommend accordingly.
What's Safe During Pregnancy
ARB™ Shampoo+. The formula is built around scalp-cleansing ingredients and the ARB™ proprietary fatty-acid complex, applied externally. It contains no minoxidil, tretinoin, finasteride, dutasteride, or any other prescription active. Use it as you would your regular shampoo.
Scalp Exfoliation Brush. A mechanical exfoliation tool: no actives, no chemistry. Pair it with ARB™ Shampoo+ for the cleansing, scalp health, and circulation support you can still get during this window.
What Waits Until After
- ARB™ Topicals. All of them contain tretinoin, which is contraindicated during pregnancy, and most contain minoxidil, which is generally avoided. The F and D variants add finasteride or dutasteride, which carry birth-defect risk and are absolutely not appropriate during pregnancy.
- Oral finasteride and oral dutasteride. Not appropriate during pregnancy. These can cause birth defects in male fetuses.
- Oral Minoxidil. Generally avoided during pregnancy and while trying to conceive.
- Microderm Scalp Roller. Not used during pregnancy.
Tadalafil is not part of any protocol we prescribe for women. And to be clear about the standard we hold: the ingredients that make our medicated protocols effective all carry specific pregnancy considerations, so we take the safest read rather than the most permissive one. The cost of getting it wrong is real, and the cost of waiting is minimal.
What About Postpartum Hair Loss?
Postpartum shedding is incredibly common and is driven by the natural hormone shift after pregnancy. For most women it resolves over 6–12 months as hormone levels rebalance. If you'd like to start a fuller routine after pregnancy (and after breastfeeding, if applicable), you can retake HairIQ™ at that point. See our guide on retaking the HairIQ™ assessment.
When to Talk to Your Physician
- If you become pregnant while on an Adegen protocol, please contact your Adegen provider and your OB-GYN right away so they can adjust your protocol.
- If you have questions about a particular phase (pregnancy, breastfeeding, trying to conceive), your Adegen provider can give you guidance specific to your situation.
- Always loop in your OB-GYN about any medication you're taking during pregnancy.
A Note From Us
We know hair loss during pregnancy or postpartum can feel especially difficult: your hair is changing, and most of the tools that would normally help aren't on the table. Please don't feel bad for asking. ARB™ Shampoo+ and the Exfoliation Brush will support your scalp now, and a fuller routine will be available when the time is right.
