I was denied a prescription: what now?Updated 17 hours ago

Quick answer

A prescription denial is never a verdict on you. It's the physician's clinical judgment that the specific protocol you were routed to isn't appropriate based on your medical history or current situation. In almost every case, there's an alternative. The message you received will explain what the physician saw and what they recommend instead. If you'd like to talk through it, message us and we'll connect you with the team that can help.

Why Denials Happen

A few of the most common reasons:

  1. Medical history conflict. A condition, medication, or interaction you reported in your medical questionnaire that makes the recommended protocol unsafe or unwise for you.
  2. Cardiovascular factors. Some treatments (particularly Oral Minoxidil and Tadalafil) require a clean cardiovascular screen. If your history raised a flag, your physician may decline the systemic option but offer a topical alternative.
  3. Pregnancy or trying to conceive. Most hair loss medications aren't appropriate during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. The alternative, ARB™ Shampoo+ and the Exfoliation Brush, is available and safe. See our guide on using Adegen products during pregnancy.
  4. Women of childbearing potential and DHT blockers. Oral DHT blockers (finasteride, dutasteride) are generally not prescribed to women of childbearing potential because of birth-defect risk during pregnancy. Topical variants without a DHT blocker may still be appropriate.
  5. Allergies or sensitivities. A documented allergy to a specific active ingredient.
  6. Insufficient information. Sometimes a denial really means "I need more information before I can approve this." In that case, the physician will tell you what's missing.

What to Do Next

  1. Read the message from your physician carefully. The denial message includes the reason and, in almost every case, the alternative your physician recommends. Read it once, then read it again.
  2. Respond to your physician with any context they need. If the denial was based on incomplete information or a misunderstanding, message your provider through the Adegen account portal. They can re-review with the new context.
  3. Consider the alternative. If your physician recommended a different protocol, take it seriously. The alternative is built around what's actually safe and appropriate for you.
  4. Message support if you'd like to talk it through. We can connect you with the team that handles denials and alternatives. You're not stuck.

What Happens to Your Order

If your prescription is denied:

  • You will not be charged for the prescription portion of your order. Payment is only secured at checkout, and the pending hold for the prescription portion is released back to your card. Because it was never charged, there's nothing to refund.
  • Non-prescription items in your kit (Shampoo, accessories) can either ship to you or be removed from the order, depending on your preference.
  • Your subscription will not auto-renew under the declined protocol.

Our support team will walk you through your options. No follow-up action is required from you to release the prescription portion of the payment.

A Note From Us

A prescription denial can feel like a door closing, especially if you've spent weeks or months working up to starting treatment. We hear that. The honest truth is that the physician is doing their job: protecting you from a treatment that wasn't right for your specific situation. In almost every case, there's a path forward: sometimes a different protocol, sometimes a different medication, sometimes ARB™ Shampoo+ and a conversation about what to revisit later.

You're not stuck. We'll help you figure out what's next.
